Summer Holiday Event: Children Enjoyed the Kasumigaseki Tour Day – “Let’s Discover ASEAN!”

Introduction

As the future lies in the hands of our children, it is essential that they engage with and appreciate the diverse cultures of ASEAN. The ASEAN-Japan Centre provided an enriching opportunity for children to explore and experience ASEAN through activities designed to foster deeper friendships and cooperation between ASEAN and Japan. This summer holiday event aimed to promote international understanding by introducing ASEAN cultures, organized in close coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan.

Objectives and Goals

Our mission was to create a meaningful ASEAN experience for children. We carefully designed activities that allowed them to immerse themselves in ASEAN culture and interact with ASEAN national staffs of AJC, inspiring them with the beauty of the region. Our goal was for the children to leave with lasting, joyful memories of ASEAN, accompanied by smiles.

Activities and Highlights

The event featured a wide range of interactive activities, including:

  • Indonesian Angklung Music Experience: Children learned to play the traditional bamboo instrument.
  • Malaysian Batik-Making Workshop: A hands-on experience in crafting Batik art.
  • Borneo Insects and Forests Talk: A fascinating talk show introducing the unique flora and fauna of Borneo.
  • ASEAN Gemstone Soap-Making Workshop: Children created soap resembling ASEAN gemstones.

In addition, participants enjoyed other engaging activities such as:

  • Craft Corner: Making fans stamped with ASEAN icons, coloring ASEAN national flags.
  • Traditional Costume Experience: Trying on traditional attire from various ASEAN countries.
  • ASEAN Business Card Creation: Designing business cards using ASEAN writing scripts.
  • ASEAN Sports Corner: Trying out sports like Sepak Takraw and Da Cau.

Through these activities, children gained a broader understanding of ASEAN cultures and developed international awareness, even without traveling abroad. The opportunity to interact with ASEAN staffs provided a unique cultural exchange experience not commonly found in their everyday lives.

Moving Forward

We recognize the importance of motivating and inspiring children. The shaping of the future depends on our everyday dedication, with children playing a crucial role in this journey. We remain committed to creating opportunities that build a brighter future.
