Capacity building for Brunei Darussalam towards Advancing Circular Packaging Design and Labelling

The drive towards sustainability in food packaging and labelling materials constitutes a pressing issue within the ASEAN region. As part of a bilateral promotional effort for Brunei Darussalam, the ASEAN-Japan Centre in collaboration with the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam, organised the event titled “Capacity Building for Brunei Darussalam: Advancing Circular Packaging Design and Labelling”. This initiative took place from March 4th to 8th, 2024, in Tokyo and sub-urban areas.

The primary objective of this project was two-fold; to inspect Japanese technology to shift food packaging materials and labeling into more environmental conscious and recyclable quality in Brunei, and to share the container and packaging recycling scheme in Japan. Participation in this initiative included government officials whose works are related to trade and investment, as well as representatives from food and packaging companies in Brunei Darussalam.

Circular Packaging Design for Future Solutions

Circular packaging design represents a forward-looking solution poised to address the pressing challenges of sustainability in packaging. By integrating post-consumer recycled materials, and promoting reusability, circular packaging design lays the foundation for a more sustainable future. This approach not only mitigates environmental impact but also fosters a culture of resource efficiency and waste minimisation. As we navigate towards a more sustainable future, circular packaging design stands as a pivotal tool in advancing environmental stewardship and promoting a circular economy ethos within the packaging industry.

The Gumma Central Plant, TOPPAN’s flagship packaging facility, exemplifies Japanese innovation and sustainability

With cutting-edge technology, the plant manufactures a diverse range of barrier packaging materials, including the renowned GL FILM. The visit provided participants with insights into eco-friendly practices and environmental sustainability measures, allowing them to learn firsthand from Japan’s experience.

The development of recycling systems for containers and packaging are vital initiatives in advancing environmental sustainability.

This project provided invaluable insights into the current practices of container and packaging collection and recycling in Japan and Brunei Darussalam. As we consider implementing Japan’s proven systems and schemes across the ASEAN region, it is clear that adapting this know-how to local conditions and cultural contexts is necessary for widespread adoption and effectiveness in promoting sustainable practices throughout the region.

Way Forward:

Taking this special year marks the 40th Anniversary of Diplomatic Cooperation of Japan and Brunei Darussalam in 2024, the ASEAN-Japan Centre will work more closely with the Brunei government to promote trade and investment for the sake of further contribution to enhance the cooperative relationship of both countries.
